Reading is a means of developing learning skills. It strengthens students’ concentration and improves their language proficiency. Our school actively promotes reading to stimulate students’ interest, cultivate regular reading habits and foster independent learning. We hope students will come to appreciate books as a treasure trove of knowledge.
- Reading Sessions
Our school holds reading sessions every morning, during which all teachers and students read quietly in their classrooms. Students read books of their own choice or materials provided by teachers. Starting in September, Chinese and English reading months alternate throughout the school year. - Reading Award Schemes
Our school offers the Chinese Reading Award Scheme, English Reading Club, English Reading Buddy Scheme and Online Reading Program. These initiatives encourage students to read widely across different types and genres of books beyond the curriculum. Students receive rewards after completing a specified number of reading worksheets, subject to verification by teachers or student language ambassadors. - Library Activities
To broaden students’ reading horizons and strengthen national security education on campus, the library launched a three-year cross-curricular reading programme in the 2023/24 school year. Each year, the programme focuses on two areas of national security to deepen students’ understanding. Themed reading materials also connect learning across different subjects.
Themes of the Cross-curricular Reading Programme
- Resource Security and Nuclear Safety
- Cultural Security and Ecological Security
- Cybersecurity and Science and Technology Security
The library also organises a variety of activities to stimulate students’ interest in reading. These include lunchtime quizzes with prizes, lunchtime cultural talks, themed book exhibitions, annual teachers’ book selections, school book fairs, book recommendation campaigns, and visits to Hong Kong Central Library and the Hong Kong Book Fair.
To encourage students to make good use of public library resources and develop their independent learning skills, our school will participate in the public libraries’ “One Student, One Library Card” scheme. We will arrange group applications for students who do not yet hold a public library card.
